CARDINAL WINDS

Orientation. Discipline after the flood.

Release Date: 08.27.2021

Cardinal Winds is the tenth canonical RANGES studio album, recorded during 2020–2021 and released without announcement, emerging from silence with only a handful of advance singles as signals before the flood.

The album continues directly from the collapse of Babel: Confusion of Tongues. Where Babel fractures language and system, Cardinal Winds begins with water. The ocean becomes the symbol of dissolution, washing away the architecture that failed to hold.

Not triumph. Reckoning.

In the wake of collapse, the question becomes simple and severe.

How does one navigate a world with no map?

The answer is orientation.

The album takes its structure from the cardinal directions: North, East, West, South. The cover art forms a compass rose dividing the waters into four quadrants, the four corners of the world. These directions are not metaphor alone. They are instruments of navigation. When the horizon disappears, direction becomes survival.

Inside the record, orientation becomes moral rather than geographic. The Cardinal Virtues, Prudence, Fortitude, Justice, Temperance, appear within the album’s interior artwork as classical figures bearing the traditional symbols of their domains. They function not as doctrine but as bearings.

At the center of the album stands its namesake, Cardinal Winds. The composition forms the axis of the record, the fixed point around which the surrounding movements turn. Without a center, the winds scatter. With a center, the winds guide.

Within The Arcana, Cardinal Winds occupies Column Three of Octave Two, the position of discipline and alignment. In The Lexicon, this position corresponds to The Cross. The Cross marks intersection, balance, and the alignment of opposing forces. In Octave One, Bonhoeffer established conscience through declaration. In Octave Two, that conscience becomes direction. The vow becomes navigation.

Across The Mirror, Cardinal Winds is paired with Sin. Where Cardinal Winds offers orientation through the virtues, Sin explores what follows when that orientation is abandoned. One provides the compass. The other reveals the descent that occurs when it is ignored.

When the tower has fallen.

The winds decide the course.

Cardinal Winds was released on vinyl in Europe via dunk!records, and the United States via A Thousand Arms. The demand and reception warranted a second pressing, with both runs limited to 500 units each.

Each pressing featured two variants per region, designed to mirror and oppose one another across the hemispheres. But beyond these, a hidden layer existed.

A fifth variant (the red + blue cross pattern) was never publicly listed. Instead, it was used as a reward, granted only to those who discovered hidden online store links embedded in the folder labyrinths of the Intercardinal flash drives. Four of these variants were distributed in this manner, forming a perfect cross within the compass.

An additional variant, the purple pulsar, was limited to 50 copies and sold exclusively during RANGES’ 2022 European Tour.

The Deluxe Edition of Cardinal Winds was produced in a limited edition of 33 copies, conceived not as a conventional bundle but as a physical artifact reflecting the album’s themes of orientation, sustenance, and endurance.

At its center was the album itself, pressed on 180 gram milky and bone marble vinyl with blue and aqua center and silver splatter, presented in gatefold packaging with a screen printed vellum insert. A six panel digipak CD and digital download accompanied the vinyl, preserving the work across physical and digital forms.

Surrounding the record were a series of objects chosen to echo the elemental character of the album. A custom blended Bohea tea titled Sojourner was prepared in Bozeman, Montana by The Spice and Tea Exchange, while a jar of raw Solace honey, harvested and extracted by the band in Amsterdam, Montana, carried sweetness directly from the surrounding land.

The preparation of these elements was accompanied by a tea infuser bearing a custom sculpted bronze Ranges charm linking the act of brewing to traditions of transformation and alchemy.

Additional artifacts extended the visual language of the album outward. A screen-printed tea towel bearing the Cardinal Winds motif, a Ranges logo sticker, and a Ranges shirt carried the symbols of the record into the physical environment of the listener.

Each set was housed within a full color printed box featuring the album artwork, then sealed within screen-printed mailers and themed shipping containers. As with previous Ranges Deluxe Editions, the entire set was assembled in extremely limited quantity and functioned as a complete physical counterpart to the album itself.

Released on August 27, 2021 through A Thousand Arms Music, the Deluxe Edition of Cardinal Winds transforms the album’s themes of direction and survival into a collection of objects drawn from land, craft, and ritual preparation.
