THE ARCANA
The hidden structure of the RANGES discography.
The Arcana is the underlying structure that binds the entire RANGES discography into a single system.
Rather than existing as a simple sequence of releases, the albums are arranged within a larger architecture composed of twenty-one works. These works are organized across three Octaves of seven, each occupying a fixed position within the pattern. These positions are not arbitrary. Each column carries an archetypal role that repeats and intensifies as The Octaves rise.
In this way, every album participates in two movements at once.
Vertically, the works ascend through The Octaves. Each new cycle revisits the same structural roles, but from a higher level of awareness.
Horizontally, the albums form a spread known as The Arcana. Within this arrangement every work occupies a defined place within the full twenty-one album system.
This structure was first revealed visually within the gatefold of Babel: Confusion of Tongues. There the full spread appears as Fig. 21, a diagram arranging the albums as a three by seven field. The rows represent The Octaves. The columns represent the recurring archetypal positions each album occupies as the cycle progresses.
At the center of this architecture stands 33, the eleventh album and the crux of the entire structure. It functions as the still point of The Arcana, the moment where the ascent becomes conscious of itself. From this midpoint, the discography bends into reflection.
Albums before 33 are mirrored by albums that follow it.
These pairings are not repetitions but refinements. The first half of The Arcana represents discovery, formation, and unconscious ascent. The second half represents consequence, integration, and deliberate authorship. Each mirrored album revisits the same archetypal position from a more mature perspective, revealing what the earlier step truly meant.
The Arcana transforms the discography into a conversation across time. Earlier works plant questions that later works must answer. Symbols introduced in one Octave return transformed in the next. Patterns that once seemed incidental reveal themselves as structural.
What begins as instinct becomes architecture.
Seen in its entirety, The Arcana is not simply a catalog of albums. It is a map of transformation. Each record functions as both a chapter in a story and a position within a larger spread, contributing to a single evolving narrative that moves from origin to ascent, from descent to refinement, and ultimately toward return.
When the final album is placed, The Arcana will reveal its full shape.
Until then, the pattern continues to unfold.
