Episode 033 | Writing & REcording Cardinal Winds
This episode moves into early 2021, when the band wrapped up The Path of the Ascensionist cassette series with two experimental tapes designed to be played over The Ascensionist and Babel, creating an alternate listening experience. Around the same time, Babylon the Great, Part II quietly appeared as a digital release, accompanied by a short run of flawed lathe cuts and minimal fanfare. dunk!records marked their 10-year anniversary with a special gold edition of The Ascensionist, while Prelude III announced the approach of a new album. Writing Cardinal Winds during the uncertainty of the pandemic brought both struggle and experimentation, leading to shop-recorded sessions, re-amping techniques, and collaborative ambient interludes. The concept centered on the four cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance as a moral compass for navigating turbulent times.
