AB SA RO KA
The foundation. Terrain as origin.
Original Release Date: 03.01.2014 - Vinyl Release Date: 03.29.2024
AB SA RO KA marks the beginning of RANGES. Rooted in landscape rather than doctrine, it establishes the band’s earliest language. Unlike later works that orbit moral, philosophical, or symbolic frameworks, AB SA RO KA is elemental. It is terrain before theology.
The title references the Absaroka Range of Montana, grounding the project geographically and spiritually. This is not metaphorical ascent. It is physical elevation. The mountain precedes the temple.
Sonically, the album is expansive and patient. Themes unfold slowly, emphasizing environment over narrative. The compositions feel less like chapters and more like vistas. Wide, open, and indifferent to interpretation. The track titles appear as fragments, syllables before sentence. A mantra of place, not yet a lexicon of meaning.
Visually, the language is restrained. Earth tones. Negative space. No overt symbolism. In hindsight, the absence matters. The symbolic system had not yet surfaced because the system itself had not yet been recognized.
Within The Arcana, AB SA RO KA occupies Column One of Octave One, the position of genesis, wilderness, and the unformed self. In The Lexicon this position corresponds to The Cube, the symbol of origin and first form. It is rawness before intention, the state before refinement. Not a thesis, but the beginning of one.
Across The Mirror, this archetype will ultimately be answered by album twenty-one. The return cannot be to wilderness alone. It must be wilderness chosen with full awareness. The same ground, revisited with a formed self.
